Retirement Estimate and Consultation

Step One:

Thinking of Retiring?

Probably the most common questions when pondering retirement are:

“How much will my annuity be?”

“How much less will my retirement check be than my current check?", and

Can I even afford to retire?

The first step in finding these answers is acquiring a thorough and accurate estimate of the income and expenses related to your FERS benefits.

Retirement Estimate and consultation Report

I offer a comprehensive report that will provide you with estimates of your projected FERS annuity, your Retirement Annuity Supplement, as well as your TSP balance in the future. This report is in excess of 20 pages and provides enough detail for those that really want to analyze every component. There are even additional resource links for further research.

However, we realize not everyone wants to spend hours diving into numbers. For those that want to look at just big picture numbers, there are summary pages.

Regardless of who you are, the service includes a one-on-one consultation. We go through the report line by line.

Think of it as a personal retirement seminar tailored specifically to YOUR situation with your numbers.

(Not all pages of an actual report are shown in the sample.)

Step Two:

Obtaining the Report

If you are interested in obtaining a report based on your numbers and your specific situation, you probably have questions on how the process works.

I have the answerS

Please click on the box below to download a Detailed Information Sheet that explains the service in detail, as well as the cost. (It’s $500).

If, after you have reviewed the information, you feel that the service suits what you are looking for, please email me chris@barfieldfinancial.com and I will send you paperwork to get started.

Step Three:

Putting it Together

AKA, How to get peace of mind:

The consultation phase

We will go through your report (along with your spouse if you’d like), line by line and explain the numbers. At this point, we will discuss your options for survivor benefit, FEGLI, TSP, etc. Depending on your particular situation, I may provide some pointers to make your retirement go more smoothly.

Income Now vs. Income in Retirement

We will do an in-depth comparison of your pre-retirement income with your pension income in retirement. You will be shown in detail the ballpark target salary (or income replacement) you will need in retirement to net the same pay you are currently earning.

For example, I might say, “John, even though your salary now is $150,000, in retirement, you’ll only need to get a job paying $65,000 to bring home exactly what you’re bringing home now. Anything above that would be a raise.” (I have this conversation several times a day.)

Maybe even more importantly, the methodology will be explained to you so that you can run these numbers yourself. I find that helps alleviate the stress that sometimes comes with the uncertainty of retirement. I don’t want to just spoon feed you information, I want to teach you how to generate the information for yourself. That creates confidence in the numbers. And…

confidence removes stress.

ADD-ON SERVICES:

1. The $500 includes ONE RETIREMENT DATE. There will be an additional charge ($200) for those of you that want to compare several dates. Sorry, but I have to do the same amount of work to completely rework the report, because changing one date changes literally everything on the report.

As those that have gone through this before, they know that retiring mid-year or end-of-year makes virtually no difference in the long run. True, you can change your numbers substantially if you stay for years longer, but you typically need to stay a long time. A few months will do virtually nothing.

2. There will also be an additional $250 charge if you have a divorce decree and you want me to determine the amount that OPM will deduct from your annuity/supplement. This calculation is complicated and takes additional time to complete. I will need a copy of all divorce documents—please redact PII from them!

What I DO NOT/WILL NOT do:

  • Sell financial products of any kind whatsoever.

  • Push you to someone who does sell financial products of any kind whatsoever.

  • Manage your TSP.

  • Try to sell you on any other service. This is it. This is what I do.
